As children, the world around us appeared to be truly magical. We had profound appreciation for everything we could see, touch, smell, hear, taste, and experience. Upon reaching adolescence and adulthood, however, we learn many lessons that seem to prevent us from accessing the “magic”.
This can be reversed however, through the practice of gratitude. So many times throughout my life I have heard about the wonders of practicing gratitude, but I never understood what that truly meant. I always say “thank you”, and I try my best to appreciate the good things I receive in life. What more could there possibly be? Luckily, after stumbling upon the book “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne, I came to understand what it truly means to be grateful, and what your life can become once you make the practice a daily ritual.
“The Magic” features a series of gratitude practices designed to be followed over the course of 28 days. After the 19 days I have completed thus far, here are some of the most valuable things I have come to understand from my reading:
- Like truly does attract like. Repeated many times throughout the book is the line, “Whoever has gratitude will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have gratitude, even what he has will be taken away from him.” Byrnes is discussing the law of attraction, which is just as much universal law as gravity is! Evidence shows that the more we practice gratitude and give thanks on a daily basis, the more abundance will begin to flow to us.
- The magic formula to being grateful: Deliberately think and say the magic words, “thank you.” The more you deliberately think and say the magic words, thank you, the more gratitude you actually feel. The more gratitude you deliberately think and feel, the more abundance you receive!
- If you can’t find any reason to be thankful, then the fault lies within you. When you wake up in the morning, give thanks for another day. Give thanks for your health, your eyes, legs, the bed you slept in, a roof over your head, running water, food, anything and everything you have received in your life. Taking anything for granted guarantees that more will be taken from you in turn.
Stopping to take in and be thankful for the beauty that fills each day is the key to childlike enjoyment of life. Even if you are facing great adversity, take time to notice, acknowledge and give thanks for all of the good that surrounds you and you will unlock the magical quality of life you deserve!
